chandalier table lamp

rewired old table lamp because all oldwires brittle.lamp has 4 candle lit arms and a center 3 way bulb.replaced socket in center with a 3 way.when you turn to different levels of lighting all 5 lights light.i thought the candles would light 1st then the 3 way then both levels then off.it lights currently almost like a dimmer in a lamp.i rewired exactly as was but some of the original sockets on candles were out i replaced them.the orginal wiring had all white wires together, all black together and then an added piece of each color ponytailed to socket.it lights but don't want any shocks have to return lamp to old lady who asked me and i volunteered.am i missing a step or does this need a different socket.

The three way socket only controls the bulb in it, not the other candles.
If this has a standard wall switch, and I suspect it does, applying power will lght the candles and the center three way will be off or at some level of brightness depending on it's socket switch position.

You need the proper socket, and you need to wire like the original was.
