Question Box required for fluorescent shop lite???

I'm putting in a fluorescent shop lite between the first floor joists in the unfinished area of my basment. It will be attached to a pair of 3-way switches. I know in a finished ceiling situation, there's a recessed box above the fixture for the connections. For this set-up does code allow me to bring the NMB (2 of them) right into the fixture or does it have to first go to a box and then feed the fixture?

Thanks guys!

The fluorescent fixture is a box, so running your cable directly into the fixture will be acceptable. Use the proper strain relief in the hole to prevent chafing just as you would in a regular junction box.
