how many 12/2 cables per hole

Mu question is about code requirements for the size of the hole through a stud or a joist to run 12/2 romex, I mean if I am running 2 or 3 or 4 ..... cables, how big the hole should be.

For electrical purposes edges of holes can not be closer than 1 1/4" to the face of a 2x4 stud wall. So a 1" on center hole would be max.

I'm not sure on the floor joist but the 1 1/4" from face must be maintained and you cant bore the middle 1/3 of the joist or L/3. So if the joist is 9 foot long for example you cant bore the area from 3' to 6'. The maximum hole size is d/6 so I believe that is 1 3/16" or so but not more than 1 1/4 " maximum bore size as far as building codes go for a 2x8 floor joist. So I suppose this means you can bore a hole 1 3/16" or maybe 1 1/4 " anywhere in the area L/3 from the joist ends and maintaining 1 1/4" from the face.

Might want to get further input on the joist hole size so wait for other replies.

The hole needs to be large enough you can install the cables without damage. 4 #12 cables is a lot in a hole smaller than 3/4 or 7/8 inch or so. If you need to go larger just use notch plates if you have less than 1 1/4 inch between the edge of the hole and the edge of the board

Drill multiple holes. I don't recommend more than two cables per hole.
