Light switch question

I have a lightswitch in my pantry, when I switch it on the light does not come on right away, but there is a "noise" that you hear sounds like a very light grinding type of noise once it stops the light comes on.
Could it be the switch itself or a loose connection??

Yes.

Start with the switch. single pole I presume (1 location).
shut off the power and remove the sw. and ONLY the wires connected to it. Install the new one the same way. then let us know.

That sound you hear is quite possibly an arcing sound caused by a loose wire terminal connection, or worn internal contacts. This can be an unsafe situation and should be fixed right away by replacing the switch, and while you are at it just visually inspect all connections in the box for signs of trouble.
