I use 3/16"-1/4" wire rope typically. Fold it over at each end and use the U-bolts designed for this purpose.
A heavy eye bolt or porcelain service insulator works at the anchor end.

I use 1/8" wire rope with two saddle clamps on each end. On the riser I use a mineralac clamp and an eye bolt. On the roof I use an eye lag into a joist. Passes around here and has ample strength for this.

Saddle clamps. That's them.

I try to keep electrical service entrances out of my beer locker... :-)

I often forget what it's like for people with real winters, sorry.

Oh, and to the OP, saddle clamps have a direction. "Don't saddle a dead horse" is the way to remember that the U-bolt portion and not the saddle portion go on the dead end of the wire.
