#8 wire

I have some #8 wire left over from installing my air compressor.

Can I use it for a mig welder. The book says I need a 40 amp breaker. Will #8 wire carry 40 amps?

Thank you

#8 is rated to 40 amps, provided it is COPPER wire.

This all depends. What and how is this#8 constructed?. Is it a cable? or is it a single conductor?

I presume stranded (many strands incased in 1 jacket).

Yes you can use this, IF labled THH/WN. It also will need to be installed in some type of conduit with a ground,#10 ins. min.

Keep in mind 310.3- Stranded Conductors. Where installed in raceways, conductors of size 8 AWG and larger SHALL BE stranded.
