Unhappy All electricity from circuit out, but circuit not tripped - Help

I was doing some work in the basement and my wife said that many lights started to flicker. Then, everything in the house turned off and on once.

The outlet I was working on is fine, but everything that's running off of one circuit is out. It's not the one I was working on. It was not tripped and I flipped it on and off a few times, but nothing. HELP!

The most likely cause is that a wire has become disconnected at a junction. You will have to check every location on the circuit that is partially out. The problem could be at a working location or a non-working one. Re-do all wire nut connections and check each and every connection. A two wire tester or analog meter will help you.

Another possibility is that you damaged a wire inside the wall. This will be harder to find and will mean that the wire will have to be replaced.

Another possibility is that you caused a GFCI to trip.

Talking Fixed

Thanks for the help. It makes sense now. The area where I was working WAS on the same circuit. There was a loose wire in there, but that outlet still worked cause it still had it's connection, just nothing thereafter.

Fortunately, that was the first place I checked. I got it back up and repaired it so that the wire will not break free any longer.

Thanks so much!

Smile

It's not the one I was working on.

I've used this line myself. (LOL). Sorry I couldn't help myself.
It brought back some funny stories.
