Adding an outlet beside a switch

Can you add an outlet beside a switch in an existing home? I need an outlet beside a window. There is an light switch beside the window and I was wondering if I could take out the switch box, put in a dual switch box and add an outlet beside the switch. Thanks, Jen

Electrically, it depends on the wiring that is in the box.

Per code it depends on the room and the circuit layout.

Start with the wires in the switch box. You need a neutral wire, in addition to the hot wire, and a ground is required. What wires are in the box, and how are they connected?

Are there are no ground wires? What sort of wiring is in the house? NM type wiring?

You can provide a receptacle at this outlet-box using a single device which is a "combination" device. "one-half" on the device is a single-pole switch, and the other a single receptacle.

If the two White wires are connected together, and each of the two Black wire terminate on the existing switch, 2 White + 2 Blacks = 4 wires in the outlet-box, then one cable "pair", = 1 Black and 1 White, is a "Feed-In" cable with 120 volts between the Black/White wires of the pair when the switch is in the "Off" position.
