Can I use PVC tube with metal boxes?
In my garage I plan to run a 1/2" PVC from the sub-panel to a 3 gang light switch box about 4 feet away and to a GFCI in a metal box just below the panel. In one of the Self-Help Wiring books at Lowes it said to only use PVC with PVC Boxes and not metal boxes.
My friends newer home has PVC for his main feed into his 200 Amp Main panel, so can I use the PVC for my project or do I have to use metal conduit?
Thanks

You can use PVC with metal boxes. They make connectors to use for the connection. The connector will glue on to the conduit and there will be a lock nut for inside the box. You must make sure that you run a ground wire through the conduit and properly ground each metal box.

PVC conduit is not substantial enough to qualify as protection for the wiring, so if the wiring is in an exposed area that could be subject to damage use EMT conduit instead. If the run is not in an exposed area, then PVC with glue by thread box connectors and locknuts are fine.

UNCLE!
Whats the point? We understood the question.
Intermediate non metalic, Riged non metalic... Get it.
For the lay (Non-Electrician) person whom we try to help, sch-40-sch80- helps identify what they need.
Send your helper out tommorow for some Non metalic conduit, What will you ask them to get?
Again: What would you use rising a pole next to a street? If it must rise in NON-Metalic conduit.

Good luck trying to find Schedule 80 in less than 1-1/4". I've looked; none of the supply houses or the big boxes around here carry it. The supply houses can order it by the pallet, but who the hell could ever use 6000' of 3/4" PVC schedule 80 when EMT or RMC is probably more appropriate anyway?
