Wall Sconce Retrofit
I need to install two new wall lights, each weighing about 5-7 pounds, though they protrude from the ball by about 10 inches. So, not a lot of weight, but a little stress on the box from the protrusion.
I have drywall on metal studs. I do not wish to cut a lot of holes in the wall (fishing electricity to the locations probably won't be a problem). Can I use a wall box without in-wall reinforcements? Has anyone ever tried using one of those old work ceiling fan box braces with metal studs? Will they grip the metal studs?
Thanks

If you are rewiring with 14-2 with only one wire to each location, you can use pancake round boxes attached directly to the studs. Using an "old work" box won't give you any support as their support relies on the strength of the wall strata (sheetrock, wood, etc.). The old work box will not be attached to the studs, due to the nature of it's attachment points.
