Stapling cable for remodel box
NEC requires that NM cable be attached to a framing member within 8 inches (I believe) of an electrical box. I am adding a couple of switches to a finished wall, using plastic remodel boxes. Given that I can't attach the cable to framing without tearing open the wall, is it acceptable to allow the cable to hang freely in the wall cavity, with no attachments between the wall top plate and the built-in cable clamp on the remodel box?
I am guessing that people do this all the time when adding boxes to finished walls, but I haven't been able to find documentation of acceptability of this practice.
Thanks in advance for any tips.

Fished in NM can't be stapled so the code says it's ok to let it hang inside the wall. If new work you would need to staple within 12" of the box and support at a minimum of every 4 and 1/2 feet.
