Stumped In Illinois

Was cleaning dining room lighting fixture and bulp popped rendering entire unit powerless. Wanted to replace fixture anyway. Fixture is on a dimmer switch. New fixture won't light. Have tested it using an old extension cord and it lights fine but won't light when testing against wiring from box. Have tested wiring from box using a meter and its hot - - i.e. get reading when I turn dimmer switch on - - no reading when I turn dimmer switch off. I'm stumped why fixture works off extension cord but won't work off of hot wires out of box. Wires in the box are one blue and two whites threaded together. Also a red that was not used for the previous fixture which I assume is for a ceiling fan.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

How did you test the wires? I suspect your testing method was flawed.

You may have blown the dimmer. Try installing a regular switch to test it. I agree with racaft, your testing method may be flawed.

I'd almost bet money that you used a digital meter.
