Bathroom vent and light

My bathroom vent and lights are on the same switch. The sound from the vent is annoying if you are only cleaning the room.
After pulling the switch, I noticed that there was one wire on a screw terminal and 2 wires on the other. When I disconnected the wires to install a double switch I noticed what I had assumed was 2 wires was really one wire with insulation removed at the center and connected to the terminal screw.
I cut this wire in half and conneced one end to each terminal and the hotwire to the hot terminal. It worked.
Is this correct?
Thanks

To know whether what you did had any effect or not, or was correct or not, we need to know what the other ends of this wire were connected to.

I'm guessing because I can't get to the ceiling. Pigtailed to light and vent.
