Receptacle in hallway closet allowed?

I will be running CAT5 cable for my home computer network this spring and have a question.

I want to install a receptacle in a hallway closet (up near a shelf) to power my cable modem and router. Is this allowed?

I will either run a new circuit for this, or be tapping off the hallway light circuit if that's allowed?

I don't have access to my N.E.C. file to check.

Local codes

NEC does not say you can't. My State, NO. Unless dedicated for equipment,This makes it a mechanical rm. No storage of clothes etc.
