Question Find an electrical short in wall

My mother in law has a short in her bathroom somewhere, you can hear a hissing and a snapping when the power is on. We have cut the power to that circut. Is there a way to find the problem without tearing the walls apart?

The odds are good that the problem is in one of the device boxes, or the device itself. Open up the switch box, the recepticle box, the vanity light box and check inside the fan. Make sure power is off of coarse the whole time. The signs of a short should be obvious. Look for black marks and melted insulation.

I have a light fixture in my bathroom that was making a hissing sound....one of the sockets <small base incandescent> was arcing....melted the plastic around the socket. Just a thought.

Smile Electical short in wall

It was the light switch that was arcing due to water running down in the wall from the upstairs washroom! Thank you for the help, now I can fix the wiring after I rip her wall out to fix the pipe and put new drywall up.
