Question Light Switch - Makes a Buzzing sound then trips Breaker

I have a light switch in the hall outside my master bedroom that is for the attic overhead light. It runs on the same breaker as one wall of my bedroom's electrical outlets and the ceiling fan. Last night, I turned on the attic light and it made a buzzing sound (like a clothes dryer would at the end of a cycle) and then it tripped the breaker. The lights in bathroom across the hall dimmed when this occured. What causes this and what type of fix do I need? My house was built in 1940, but the attic light switch was added about 15 yrs ago by the previous owner. The breaker box was also upgraded at the same time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The most likely explanation is a loose connection. Check the wire connections in the various junction boxes involved. It's also possible it's a switch gone bad.

Also could be a hot-neutral or hot-ground short....either in a cable, fixture or switch location.
