Emerg.Gen. High Voltage

My 5000 watt emerg.gen. went over speed because of a broken spring on the governor. It put out 300 and 600 volts on the 120 and 220 legs.It burned out 4 gfi outlets and the strip surge protector that feeds my computer. Will a panel surge protector protect my whole house?I think i need something for high voltage not amps. Will a model 1g1240rc intermatic panel guard work? What happens if the Gen. goes overspeed again, will this work to protect it only once? Thank You for any help you may have. 19colbob79

I don't think a surge protector will do any good. They are designed for transient overvoltage spikes of very short duration....sustained ones like this will probably just destroy the surge protector. I'm not familiar with the other device, but some sort of overvoltage relay or frequency relay would work. I'm not sure if they are readily available for your type of generator.
