2-3 way 1-4 way switch multiple can lights

All,

I have 5 can lights 2-3 way switches and 1-4 way switch in between the 3-way's, Power goes to lights first then to the 3 way and so on.

The first 3 way seems to act as master, it must be in the on position or the other two switcheds do not work other than that it is working right. Is this right or have I mussed this up? I have been messing with this for about a week and have tried every combination that I can find on-line and in books.

Thanks
Al

Multiple lights complicate a three way or four way setup. If you go to the first light, then to the second light, then to the third, etc., you need to use 14-3 between the lights. A better wiring method would have been to go to the switches first and then to the first light. From there to the remaining lights only requires 14-2.

If you used 14-3 between the lights, or if you wires the switches off the first light directly, then you have a wiring mistake.

Please provide details of your exact layout and we can help.

Sounds like yo have a switch loop setup. One of the wire coming from the light needs to go to the common of the first three way and the wire needs to pass through the four way to the common of the second three way.
