Installing a light fixture

Im installing a new light fixture. The problem is, the wires on the light are not labeled as to which is hot/neutral. There are 2 solid brown wires and 1 copper wire. I know the copper wire is the ground, but I can't differentiate between the other two

How do I test this?
Can I just hook it up and see if it works? Will it work both ways? If I hook it up backwards, what will happen?

Thanks!

The light will work either way, but will be installed incorrectly and less safe if you get them wrong.

The wires are labeled, you just don't know how to read the label.

Look for writing on one of the wires, or for ridges on one of the wires, or for a white stripe on one of the wires. This is the neutral wire.

Or use a multi tester on "Ohms" setting. Wire continuous to shell is neutral. Button is hot.

Thanks for all the help! I found one of the cords was smooth and one was ridged, and was able to connect the fixture correcty. Thanks again!
