can I use 12/2 UF-B indoors?

Hi, I'm adding an outlet in my attic. I have more than enough 12/2 UF-B on hand. Rather than having to go out and buy 12/2 NM, can I use this? It will be visible, so I don't want to run into any problems, if I ever have to have an inspection. Thanks, Anna

Yes. when used indoors, it follows many of the same code rules as type NM. See Article 340 for UF, and Article 334 for type NM.

Let's clarify what you mean by visible. If you mean visible in an unfinished attic and/or unfinished basement, then it's fine. However, if you mean visible in a finished are of t house then it's not fine.

But to answer your question, UF cable is legal anywhere that NM cable is legal.

Exclamation unfnished Attic use

Visable in an unfinished attic. Attached to beam. Thanks though for making sure I don't get fouled up! Anna

As long as it is adequately protected from physical damage, visible is fine. What provides "adequate" protection is largely mandated by code, but the code cannot cover every situation, so the judgment of the inspector often supplements the code.
