Floor outlets

For some reason I was under the impression that the use of floor outlets was prohibited (or at least restricted) by the NEC. I don't know where that came from, just one of those "I think I read that somewhere" things.

Several of my stationary shop tools are powered from drop down cords from the ceiling (I got tired of tripping over power cords leading to wall outlets). The cords sometimes interfere with using the tool and I would like to get rid of them. Is there any code prohibition (or guidance) regarding the use of floor outlets in a workshop.

HD has some floor outlet boxes (Carlon) with heavy brass mounting and spring loaded covers. It's the first time I've seen them. They are pricey at >$50 but worth it if I can get rid of the hanging cords. Does anyone have any experience with these? My main concern is how they might hold up in a shop environment.

Well, the certainly are not prohibited, and they certainly are restricted (like everything electrical has restrictions).

Floor receptacles in a workshop are not prohibited, but they're not particularly a good idea either, since you'll have a hard time keeping sawdust and other dust out of them. They must be in a floor-rated box (i.e., very expensive as you have seen) and have dust covers over the receptacles.

Thanks John - I'm off to big orange to spend a couple of hundred on floor boxes. My shop is over a partially unfinished garage which makes running the cables and putting in the boxes a snap. My shop layout is such that the floor boxes will actually be better protected (by the tools) than the wall outlets.
