doorbell wire splice

I had an entrance door replaced on my attached garage and needed to replace the doorbell button, and of course the wires broke. There was not enough wire to make a splice and put it in the cavity between the door jamb and rough faming, so I cut a hole in the drywall to access the wire. Can I splice a new length of wire with wire nuts and bury it in the exterior wall. Pulling a new line is not an option. I just want to know if this is allowed by code for class 2 low voltage wiring. Thanks for your help.
