3-way switches

The easiest arrangement to use is as follows:

A. Power comes to first switch on 2-wire cable with ground(black, white, ground).

B. Run 3-wire cable from first switch to second switch(red, black, white, ground).

C. Run 2-wire cable from second switch to light(black, white, ground).

I can not determine from your explanation if this is the arrangement you have. Good luck with your project.

Your existing switch has two wires( ignore grounds for this discusion). Those are the only two wires you need to be concerned with. LEAVE ALL THE OTHER CONNETIONS ALONE IN THE SWITCH BOX.
Run a three wire cable+ ground from your exisitng switch to the new switch loction. Take one of the wires from the old switch and connect it to the common screw of the new three way switch.
Connect the other wire from you old switch to the black wire of your new cable.
Connect the red and white wires to the traveler screws.
At the new switch connect the black wire to the common screw and the red and white wires to the traveler screws.

If you circuit has a 15 amp breaker use 14/3 cable. If it has a 20 amp breaker use 12/3 cable.
In all boxes connect all grounds together and to the green screw on the switch if it has one.
