What do the manufacturer's instructions require?

Agreed - read the instructions that come with the device. Ones I've seen have to be mounted in an electrical box (4" square box) and are often connected to the panel via a short nipple or offset bend (think really short conduit).

the 14-3 is more than adequate according to the instructions, my question is, there any code problem with running flexible metal (greenfield) directly from the Main service panel, or should i use a short piece of conduit.
