recessed light fixtures

How many recessed light fixtures can I put on one 20 amp circuit and on one switch? The fixtures just use one 40 watt bulb each. I have 12 that I would like to be on one switch. Do I need a 20 amp switch instead of a 15 amp? Thanks for your help.

A 20 amp circuit can provide up to 20 * 120 = 2,400 watts.

However, if running all at the same time you should try not to exceed 8- percent of this, or 1,920 watts.

You must use the maximum rated bulb for the fixture when calculating the number of lights, not the size bulb you plan to use.

20 * 40 = 800 watts, so you are fine.

The 15 amp switch is also fine, since you are not exceeding the limits of a 15 amp switch.
