Is wiring required to be in conduit?

I have to run a couple of new circuits for my remodeled kitchen.
I cannot see other wiring in the home under the home as it's under insulation.
My question is does the wiring have to be in conduit under the home? It will not be on the ground if that makes a difference.

The answer depends on where you live. In some areas conduit is required. In most areas it is not. Generally speaking wires under a house in a crawl space do not need conduit.

Assuming we are talking about cable assemblies, like Romex or MC cable.
