A/C cycle time

On Hot days my AC doesn't maintain temperture (i.e. usually gets like 80 degrees even though the AC is set on 72).

The AC will run for a while 5-10 minutes, then shutoff for 5-10 minutes. I'm wondering why it just doesn't stay on? Is this to keep things from overheating? Or is can I adjust the cycle time somehow? I believe the AC would cool the house much just fine if it would just run a little longer. Thanks

Your thermostat may be in the wrong location. It should be close to the return air vent. Also the thermostat may defective.

There's a an A/C forum in the plumbing section. Probably more up their alley.
