How to determine the right size wire nut?
I'm wondering how one goes about determining the right size wire nut for a particular purpose?
For instance, I need to connect two solid #14 wires with a single stranded #18.
I have some yellow ones (that say 2 #18 - 3 #12 AWG) that seem like they hold, but that's just guesswork.
Most of the sizing charts I could find on the internet only listed homogeneous configurations.

Well, [two #14 plus one #18] would be larger than [two #18] and smaller than [three #12] so it looks like the package clearly says it is appropriate for your application.
Also, experience says it is also.

The package description gives the minimum and maximum ranges. In your case the minimum is two #18 conductors and the maximum is three #12 wires. Anything in between those extremes is okay.
