Code for exposed Romex v conduit

Hi:
I'm running a new circuit in the garage, with a 12' ceiling. What does the Code say about exposed Romex in a garage environment? For example, can you have exposed Romex at the top of a wall, out of reach, but closer to the ground and within reach must it be conduit?

Thanks.

The code is not explicit. Exposed cable (NM, UF, etc.) must be protected. What this means is often up to interpretation. The best advice is to check with the inspector so that there are no surprises at inspection time.

In general, 12 feet off the floor would be acceptable with no extra protection. However, running down the wall to the receptacles would need to be protected. What is generally acceptable for garage spaces is to use conduit down the walls, but not up in the ceiling joists.
