Plastic washers on receptacle screws

Just a quick, simple question for my first post...

New receptacles and switches seem to come with small, square plastic washers that keep the installation screws in place while they're in the store. Should these small plastic squares be removed before installation? Do they serve any function other than keeping the screws from getting lost prior to installation? Thanks a lot!

You do not need remove them. It is a good idea for that retainer to still be there when in the future the device is pulled out for some reason.

If the box where the recptacle is installed is a surface mount box, and you do not remove the screw retainers, then you must provide a bonding jumper. In other than surface mount boxes it doesn't matter as the standard screw is not permitted to be used as the bonding means.
