Since this is only a lighting circuit, I would use 14. Even if you use 100 watt bulbs in all 8 fixture for a total of 800 watts, the draw is still under 7 amps. Well under what a 14 gauge wire and a 15 amp breaker can handle.

However, if you ever plan on extending this circuit to include some general purpose receptacles, then do yourself the favor go with a 20A and 12 gauge wire.

The wire size must match (or at least be the minimum) based on the breaker that controls the circuit. If you're tapping into a 15A circuit, you can use 14ga (or 12 ga, but there's really no need). If you're tapping into a 20A circuit, you MUST use 12ga.

If you're running a new circuit from the breaker box, you can use a 15A or 20A breaker.
15A breaker = 14ga wire
20A breaker = 12ga wire

I read this as he is installing a new circuit, but I could be wrong.
Definetly follow Zorfdt's advice if you are tapping into an existing 20 A circuit.
