Dishwasher and Garbage Disposal Wiring

I am renovating my kitchen and have a question about the wiring to the dishwasher and garbage disposal. I'm in Kentucky and this would be under the NEC2005 code. The question that I have is could I run a 12/3 wire from a 20A double-pole breaker to a junction box under the house. Then break off with two 12/2 MC cables one going to the garbage disposal and one to the dishwasher, then run another 12/2 from the junction box to the switch as a "switchleg".

The other 12/2 of course would run to the dishwasher. Another question is with the dishwasher. I was told that I would need a disconnect within sight. Will I need to install a disconnect under the sink, since the breaker panel is not within sight?

Yes, you are proposing a multi-wire circuit, which is legal.

If allowed you can install a receptacle for the dishwasher and use a cord and plug. Otherwise, you do need a disconnect, which can be a simple toggle switch.

Unless you have some heavy duty equipment, you can use 14/3.
Run it into a box under the sink and use a duplex receptacle with the tab on the hot side broken off.
You can buy a dishwasher cord kit, feed it through a hole in the cabinet and simply plug it in.

Go with the 12-3 and a 20 amp breaker. You'll be glad you did.

Thank you both for your responses. I already have the 12/2 MC cable for the two runs for the dishwasher and garbage disposal. I'll probably just install a switch under the counter for the dishwasher instead of converting it to cord and plug.

Thanks again.
