12-3 Instead of 12-2?

I'm finishing my basement and I'm ready to wire for the outlets. I have leftover 12-3 from another project. Can I use it in place of 12-2 and just not use the extra wire?

Yes, if you want. Just do not exceed box fill. And to allow for possible expansion, don't cut off the extra wire, just fold it back out of the way with a wire nut over the end.

You could also use the extra wire and wire split receptacles
Double the power.
