Question about main panels

Not sure that I understand fully how a main panel can have a 150 am main, but the total max amperage of all my breakers adds up to much more than that.. 455 amps actually.

I understand that I am not going to run each breaker at max amperage even if I had every normally plugged in electrical item in the house running at full bore, but if I was to consider having two air handlers, two heat pumps, and oven and a drier going at the same time, I would think that I would be running pretty close to the max amps for the main breaker. Am I wrong here?

The total sum of the breakers means nothing for just the reason you state. Not everything runs at the same time, and even if it did every breaker would not be maxed out.

To properly determine the size of the service feeding a house, you do a demand load calculation. This takes into account whether you use gas or electric for heat, gas or electric for hot water, gas or electric for clothes drying, whether or not you have air conditioning, and the total size of the house.
