Supporting Romex to water heater

This original electric water heater was professionally installed. It is in the corner of the basement out in the open and away from everything. For the electrical connection, it has about 2 feet of romex coming straight down from the floor joist above and connecting to the top of the heater. The wire is not supported or protected in any way after it leaves the joist. We are replacing the heater and the wire will go right back to this same place. I just wonder if there isn't some way to support or protect the wire, and whether the Code would require something.

Thanks in advance for the great help!

I use a short piece of metal cable (BX or MC) or flexible metal conduit from a junction box on the ceiling down to the WH. The code is up to interpretation on this issue, so it's really up to the electrical inspector if protection is required.

I always have my wire running straight from the panel , along the joist and straight down and into the heater.

This can only be done if there is line-of-sight from the breaker to the water heater. Otherwise, you need a junction box with a disconnect switch near the WH.
