New Dryer

The dryer is 30 amp. The plug in the basement is 50 amp, wired for range. The breaker box has 2 breakers that say 20 each.

Do I need to rewire the box to 30 and replace the recepticle so it is appropriate for a dryer? Or can I simply change the cord on the dryer with a range plug and that's it? Or do I call a handiman in to fix it?

Someone who has absolutely no idea (and apologizes if her terminology is off).

Don't call a handyman. Call an electrician if anybody.

You need a 240 volt 30 amp breaker in the panel.

You need a proper 3 wire or 4 wire dryer receptacle and a cord and plug on the dryer to match.

How many wires are part of this circuit? 3 or 4? What size are the wires?
