Need Code Reference

A neighbor of mine asked about extending a 15-amp circuit in his house by tapping off one of the receptacles. He wants to use 12 AWG NM cable because he already has some on hand. I told him I thought that would be a code violation but he doesn't believe me. What is the code reference for this situation?

There is no code reference. As long as the circuit is properly grounded it can be extended using 12 gage wire.

I don't recommend your friend do this, as it's not a good idea, but it's not a code violation. Why would it be? Wire is often upsized to handle voltage drop.

Thanks. I thought it might be an issue if someone later, seeing 12 AWG wire, would think it's a 20-amp circuit and possibly overload it.

That's why I recommend against it. Of course they would see the 15 amp breaker when they killed power.
