The solution is to provide a proper junction box and permanent wiring.

i know that would be the right way, but for what i need it for in shop, and location and availability of close outlet, i would like to wire the fan to an extension cord w/ plug to be plugged into that outlet. i would like to know how to do this and know, if done correctly, if it is also safe....
thanks.

I can think of no wiring that would make this safe, not with a fan involved.

My advice is to do it right, or don't do it.
