Wiring octagon box from side or top?

I've seen them wired both ways with the wires coming in vertical from the top, or horizontal from the side. I've done both ways, horizontal makes it easier for the ground wire, but running the wire vertical makes it a bit easier to fish the wires through. The only thing I don't like about the vertical method is that the ground wire gets stretched to the screws. Does it really matter which way you use? I've been looking at various ones in my unfinished basement and garage and its almost a 50/50 split.

Never occurred to me to wonder about that. I always based my decision on the direction of the cable, horizontal or vertical etc and number of cables. Sometimes use different opening because of number of cables from the same direction.

Yeah that makes sense logically although the ones I was looking at don't always apply to that rule. As long as no wires make contact I guess it doesn't really matter.
