Electrical Panel Problems

Hello.

I'm from Kansas City, Missouri. I have a problem concerning a friends electrical panel. Sunday night he had a couple lights go off in his house. The thought was blown bulbs. So the next day they replaced them and still no light. They then realized that the furnace wasn't working and other areas too. They called me since i have a little bit of experience with electricity.

When i inspected the panel I found that none of the breakers were popped. Even the circuits that weren't working. So i put one lead of the neon bulb tester on each set screw on the breakers and the other on the neutral bus bar. Every other breaker on the left side of the box is dead. On the right side of the panel the breaker installed on the same bus bar tab is also dead.

Now i would assume that if there is a problem with a wire or fixture somewhere on a circuit the breaker would pop. And if it doesn't the problem may arise from a bad breaker. But if all the breakers on one side of the hot bus bar don't work i would assume the problem may arise from a bad main circuit breaker. When I put a meter on the service wire lugs i got 120 Volts on each. When i turned the breaker on I only got 120 on one side. (the right side of the panel). Now if you replace the main breaker should this solve the problem. That is if that is the problem.

Thank you for any help you might be able to give.

Kevin

Electrical Panel Problems

Not sure of the terminology. I would assume POCO means your electrical company?

Thank you.

The power on one of your hot leads has gone out. Most of time it is POCO problem that is why call them first.

Even if it is the main breaker, you will have to call them to pull the meter.
