Ok, I am having a massive brain fart, in my car i want to have sort of a dimmer switch put in to the + side of my dome light, what is its real name? (dimmer switch?) or is it like flow control switch?

I work on OLD cars a lot, back then it was called a rheostat, a wire wound variable resistor. Controls on modern cars don't use the same technology, but according to Webster, that is still a good definition.

A rheostat is what you're looking for.

The type of dimmer you'd use in the house for a lamp will not work in automotive.
