wiring for outdoor spa
I'm installing a hot tub. It's requires 240v, 40/50amps, and is 50' away from the main panel where I will connect to. I need some advice...If I wire the spa control panel directly to a 50 amp gfci breaker with #8 wire, will it meet nec code?
Thanks,
Dave

Whats the actual load of the unit? and what wiring method were you going to use?

Is it 40 or 50?
Essentially, but there's an awful lot of details to make it compliant. The type of #8 is important; for example, NM-B or UF-B cable is not allowed. THWN in conduit is allowed.
You'll also need a disconnect at least 5' from the tub, but within line-of sight.

It is allowed inside of a dwelling unit though... Pools, spa's, and the like IMO are not DIY jobs, there are just way to many codes.

This is a good place to start for more info....

Home depot sells a disconnect GFCI box. It would go a min. of 5' from the tub and then be wired to the house via conduit and wiring as specified. In this case you would use a standard double pole breaker in the inside panel with the proper rating.
You need to pay particular attention to grounding and bonding. It is absolutely important it be done right.

Thanks for the replies,
I'll take your advice dsc3507 and get the disconnect and do it the safest way.
50 amp gfci disconnect, #6 wire in rigid conduit, 60 amp breaker at the main. I'll go visit the local inspector tomorrow.
Thanks guys
