What kind of welder do you expect to get?

I have a 110 arc welder that runs off of a 20 amp circuit [what you have] and I think there are some wire welders that also run off of 20 amp 110. I also have a 220 stick welder that is on a 50 amp circuit with #8 wire.

It depends entirely on the size and type of the welder.

This is almost certainly have to be upgraded to support anything but the smallest buzz box welders.

When doing wiring for welders, just follow the manufacturer's instructions. It will tell you what size breaker and what size wire to use. The calculations are complicated, and the manufacturer has already done them for you, so just use them.
