changing a nema 14-50r to 6-50r

Hi

I currently have a NEMA 6-50 receptacle installed in my garage. There's a 40amp breaker, and I'm not sure what type of wire.

I'd like to switch the receptacle to a NEMA 6-50 since I will be using this plug for a welder.

Is this as simple as just dropping the neutral wire when re-wiring?

Thanks

Yes, just cap the neutral, and connect the two hots and ground to the new receptical. There is no need to change anything at the panel.
