220V extension cord for dust collector

I would like to fabricate a 20 foot extension cord (for temporary use only) to attach a 220 volt dust collector to an existing 220 wall outlet.

The wall outlet is a 30amp 14-30R receptacle.

The dust collector has a single phase 2hp, 220volt motor rated at 9 amps. The cord is a 3 wire (including ground) 14 guage with a 6-15P plug.

Any recommendations as to the plugs/receptacles, number of conductors and wire size for the extension cord, and wiring scheme for the receptacle / plug would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forums! Dust collectors generally are not portable units, so why not just continue the circuit from the existing receptacle to another one closer to the application so you can directly hook it in and alleviate safety concerns.

It will be eaiser to just hardwired instead of running the cord and it will look much nicer and last much longer as well.

run it with #12 with 20 amp breaker with 6-20R { it will fit both 15 and 20 amp 240 volt verison }

Since the unit already has a plug on it, I wouldn't recommend cutting it off to hardwire... then you are required to bring the cord into an electrical box and make connections there, or replace it entirely. I'd use a piece of 12ga cord, the type that heavy duty commercial cords are made of. Three conductors: black/ white/ ground. The caps for the end of the cord should be a female 6-15 and the other end a male 14-30 (Take a good look at the 30A receptacle, and make sure you buy a male plug that has matching prongs). Inside the cord ends the black wire goes to brass screw, the white to silver, and the ground to green... the manufacturer should have clearly labeled the screws.
One last issue though: Because the collector isn't wired for 30A hookup already, you should not plug it into a circuit with a 30A breaker. Install a 2-pole 20A breaker on this circuit. Then what you have is a 20A circuit that just happens to have an oversized receptacle and plug in the middle of the run.
