dimmer switch

Is it hard to replace a dimmer switch? What exactly do I need to buy to do this myself? Then, what do I do?

Normally it is not hard to install a dimmer. Turn the power off and pull out the old switch. Pay attention to the existing connections, remove one at a time and move wires to the dimmer.

A single pole dimmer controls the light from one location only. A standard single pole toggle switch has the ON and OFF lables. A three way dimmer would be used if 2 switches control the same light like at the top and bottom of a stairway.

Well you need a dimmer switch. If it's a decora style make sure it comes with a plate or pick one up when you get the dimmer. If it's going in a location where there are two switches and your replacing one switch with the dimmer then you need a two gang plate. Decora on one side and a regular switch on the other.

As for how hard it is to hook up all depends on the location your putting it into. There are some variables in the switch box ie: are there recepts fed of the switch box, are there switched recepts, if there are two switches then how are the wires made up for each switch.

The more info you can give is the easier it will be for you.
