Dimmer switch question

There are switches at the opposite ends of our family room controling the FR lights. I replaced one with a dimmer switch yesterday and it works fine. But the other one with the original switch, I can't turn the lights on with it anymore. I can use it to turn off/on the lights only if the dimmer switch is at ON position. Is this normal or is it possible to correct?

Did you buy a three-way dimmer, one with three wires (not counting ground)?

Chance are that when you installed the dimmer, you connected the wrong wire to the "common" (the odd-colored wire). Tell us more about how you installed the dimmer and how you decide what to connect to what.

Yes it was the one with 3 wires plus a ground wire. I'll check it again when I go home. If the dimmer is on, I can use the other switch to turn the lights off and on. I just can't turn the lights on if the dimmer is off.
