old and new

Maybe it Is just i have yet to be exposed to all kinds of electrical configurations and routings etc. I saw a ceiling box that had 3 older romex cables running into it (two wire 12AWG circa mid to late 50's) and the 4th cable running to this box
from an outlet was a newer yellow 12-2AWG. Can these wires be mixed? Thank you!

The only issues I see are that non-grounded circuits are prohibited from being extended and a potential box fill issue.

Thanks for the reply pcboss. The bare ground wire was not hooked up to anything on the newer 12-2AWG. Infact the ground wire was folded back and taped in several spots to the outside insulation jacket.

old/new

Hi John nelson , I am not trying to accomplish anything with regards to this post. I work in a historical district in our city, and was just sharing with this forum what i saw. It did look odd to me.. I am thinking when this newer 12-2awg was put in they tried to duplicate what was already there in the other romex cables only having hot and neutral leads omitting the bare ground wire..?

Rocket, based on the limited information we have, we cannot say whether or not what you see violates any codes or not. But we can say that it might be okay. There is nothing inherently dangerous with mixing old and new wire of the same type metal.
