Door bell and Chime

Hi,
My door bell stop working so I figure let me buy a new door bell still not working, then I buy a new chime. I connected everything but its still not working correctly. When I press the door bell it is a weak chime and most of the time it doesnt even chime. I disconnected the door bell and was tapping the wirers together and it was working fine but when I connect the doorbell it doesnt work and the chime seems to hum. I am stumped. Please help if you can thanks.

If you didn't already do it, you will have to change to a 17 volt transformer. Also provided in your bell switch was 2 or 3 diodes, one of which must be installed between the terminals of the switch. I know it's rough, but you may have to break down and actually unfold the directions. NOT read them, heaven forbid!! You know how us guys are! I had to on my daughter's and you are exhibiting some of the same symptoms.
