no room in wall box

I am replacing a regular light switch with a motion activated switch. The new switch is much larger than the old one and I am having trouble fitting it into the box with all of the wires, etc. Any suggestions? Also, as I work at this I keep knocking out parts of the wall around the electrical box. I am afraid if I keep going all I am going to have is a big hole in the wall with wires sticking out of it.

Is this a metal single gang box? If so I suggest you remove it and replace it with a deep plastic single gang old-work box. You can either cut the nails holding the original box with a Sawzall or a hacksaw blade.

How many wires in the box? If it is already a plastic box you might want to go to a double gang.

I strongly suggest the double-gang box and then use a wall plate that has the single device along with a blank to cover the double gang box.
